Serious Foodie

14 Jan

I love birthdays. Sure, the getting older bit sucks, but the parties are always fun! Last weekend was my 31st birthday and I celebrated it by throwing a “Cocktails and Canapés” party. I had a great night, playing host to all of my stylish guests (I’d asked them to get dressed-up). Everyone was having a good time, the cosmos were flowing, my guests were happily munching on bite-sized canapés, and my birthday cake was mini cupcakes, with peanut butter frosting. What more could a girl want for her birthday? Well, I’m glad you asked…

I’m pretty much an open-book when it comes to my interests; food, cooking, and travel. Everyone that knows me knows this so, for my birthday gift, my wonderful husband and loving family chipped in to help send me on a cooking course. The course is called “Serious Foodie” and it is offered through Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver (the name is so fancy I feel smarter already having just enrolled!). It is an evening course, offered one night a week for eight weeks, and is intended for amateur cooks who want to take their cooking to the next level. I will be learning about knife techniques, making stocks and sauces, basic doughs, how to use pots and pans properly, and cooking with meat, fish, grains and veggies. In addition to cultivating these skills, we will also get to enjoy the fruits of our labour by dining on a three course meal, with wine, each night. I am a firm believer that every school should offer wine with enrolment; it would make school so much more enticing.

The course is not cheap, about $850 including taxes, but I’m hoping that the techniques and skills I learn will be invaluable. I will be blogging about the course so keep checking back here to see what I’m up to. Hopefully this won’t be Hell’s Kitchen-esque and I am asked to pack up my knives and leave in the first week…

Thanks B, Mum, Dad, E and L for the great opportunity. I promise to feed you all to show my gratitude. 🙂
