For everyone who is sick of hearing me rave about Jamie Oliver; never fear, help has arrived! And it comes in the form of the three Donna Hay cookbooks that I just bought. Whoo hoo. For those that have seen Donna’s books you will understand what I mean when I say that they are my food porn. You know; glossy pages full of beautiful, enticing and sexy food. Every turn of the page brings with it the licking of lips and a chorus of ooh’s and ahh’s. Boy, does the woman know how to style her food! I am really excited to get started on some recipes and have already been thumbing through the books, mentally marking recipes that I am going to attempt.
Donna is a fellow Australian and so a lot of her recipes remind me of home and of yummy Aussie cooking. What is Aussie cooking exactly? I don’t know. I can’t quite put my finger on what makes it Australian but my feeling is that Australia, like Canada, is extremely lucky to have so much influence from all of the different cultures that make up our lands and inevitably this results in culinary fusion. Australia is made up of a lot of immigrants from Mediterranean countries such as Greece, Macedonia, Italy and Turkey and also many different South-East Asian countries, particularly Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand, and I think this is reflected in the subtle influences in our cooking. Needless to say, I cannot wait to get stuck into my three new books, “Modern Classics 1”, “Off the Shelf” and “New Food Fast”. Keep checking back for recipe reviews as I will be getting started soon.
