Brief Description: A fantastic evening at the Irish Heather that combines beer, a big plate of comfort food and meeting new friends, all whilst managing to keep the financial belt well and truly reigned in.

For a foodie, the financial cost of regularly going out for dinner can take its toll. Thankfully, if you look hard enough a good deal can be had. Last night, B and I (and a friend) indulged in one such deal at the Long Table Series.

A 40 foot table in the Irish Heather, in Gastown, is the setting for a series of meals that have been matched to a beer or a cider for the very wallet-friendly price of $12 (soon to be $15). Diners go on-line to select a date, and the meal that they want to devour the most, and then email for reservations (don’t phone). Seats are fairly limited, particularly for the more favoured dishes, so keep your fingers crossed that you can get a spot! The series was initially intended to run for only 8 weeks but popular demand has forced them to extend it for another 9 weeks. Yay!

What you need to know:

* Everybody dines on the same great, filling meal that has been chosen for that evening to match with the feature beer/cider, for only $12 (changing to $15).

* The series currently runs from Monday through Wednesday, but this will soon be changing to add Thursday’s.

* Dinner is served promptly at 6.30pm on each evening.

* There are only 42 seats available for each dinner and you are encouraged to get to know the people around you.

* 8 new dishes and 9 new beers have just been added to coincide with the series extension.

Some of the menu choices include:

* Braised Beef Short Ribs with Roasted Parsnips and Horseradish Jus and a Pint of Guiness

* Roast Siroloin of Beef with Horseradish Jus, Mashed Potatoes & Yorkshire Pudding with a Pint of Phillips Blue Buck.

* Veal Schnitzel with Mashed Potatoes, Carrots and Anchovy Butter with a Bottle of Steam Whistle Pilsner.

* Beef Stroganoff with Sour Cream and House Made Pasta and a Bottle of Steam Whistle Pilsner.

* Roast Suckling Pig with Apple-Rosemary Sauce, Braised Cabbage & Mashed Potatoes with a Pint of Orchard Hill Cider.

We were lucky enough to get seats for the in-demand Roast Suckling Pig dinner and it was wonderful.

A big bowl of comfort food – tender slices of pork with intermittent pieces of crunchy pork skin, creamy mashed potatoes and braised cabbage all covered in an incredible apple-rosemary sauce. Mmmmm! Lip-smackingly good. I finished with the crème brulee but unfortunately, it was a tad too sweet for my liking.

Final Thoughts: Love, love, love it! I enjoyed it so much we are booked in next week for another dinner. This time we are trying the veal schnitzel! Yum!
