I love cake. It’s as simple as that. But being true to the word of being a food-snob (as referred to by my loving sister), I will not eat fake-tasting, overly-sweet, stomach-pain inducing cakes (Safeway, take note). That isn’t how cake should be!! The cakes that I like are fresh, home-made and should not be made with artificial sugars and colourings nor be drowning under a huge layer of icing or frosting. I am sure that the home-bakers reading this will understand what I’m saying. Ok, moving on – I promise that that is the end of the cake rant!!

My affair with the Strawberry Cake began when a company that I used to work for had no problems with spending a lot of money on gourmet cakes. This, obviously, worked out quite well my taste buds and always-demanding stomach. It didn’t work out quite so well for me when I found myself standing in the bathroom shovelling in a much-guarded piece of cake that a friend had put aside for me. Don’t get me wrong though…I don’t regret it for a minute…

So, just what is so amazing about this Temptress? I hear you ask. Well, the cake really is quite simple; three soft layers of freshly baked sponge delicately held-together with fresh cream and thin layers of strawberries. The top of the cake is adorned with plump strawberries and small pinnacles of cream. In all of its elegance, my attraction lies with its simplicity.

The maker of this delicacy that gets me acting crazy is Major the Gourmet, a Vancouver-based catering company that specializes in innovative gourmet catering. A quick glance at the pictures on their website of their incredible bite-sized hors d’oeuvres will have you salivating all over your keyboard. If you do plan on googling them, please make sure that you wear a bib. The trouble with anything of quality is that quality comes at a price. And you really do pay at Major the Gourmet: the smallest Strawberry Cake is $65, not including delivery fees or taxes, so it really is a luxury. For those who cannot afford that luxury, I do believe that if you are someone who enjoys baking and doesn’t mind putting in some good, old-fashioned effort, then you could re-create this cake at home for a lot less cost. In fact, after my last rendezvous with Major the Gourmet I have decided that from now on that is what I will do – I will attempt to re-create this masterpiece at home (whilst praying that I win the lottery).

Final Thoughts: I have also tried their Chocolate Dream Cake and the Chocolate Butter Crunch and although these are good, I am loyal and therefore, I cannot look past the Strawberry Cake. It well and truly takes the cake. Pun intended.
