Louis Gervais Spring Showcase – Photo Visit

Brief Description: Louis Gervais Fine Foods & Catering is a North Vancouver based bistro/cooking school/gourmet caterer which focuses on classic European dishes.

B and I were recently invited to the Spring Showcase at Louis Gervais, which was the same event that we had attended this time last year. We had such a fun evening last year, with tasty food and many glasses of wine, that we were looking forward to returning this year.

The team at Louis Gervais did not disappoint and they really spoiled the guests with traditional European dishes (directly from the Louis Gervais kitchen), wines from Marquis wine, and desserts from Marie Antoninette cakes. The staff were all incredibly attentive and each dish was well-executed.

Duck a L’Orange

My favourite dish of the night was the Le Filet Chateau, served with foie gras soubise glace de viande and straw potatoes.

Marquis wines provided some tasty wines, including a 2009 Cameron Hughes Lot 191 Lodi Zinfandel, which I couldn’t get enough of, and a 2009 Surani Pietrariccia Fiano.

Dessert was provided by Marie Antoniette cakes, who also provided the ridiculously good cupcakes at last years event. The rich and moist chocolate cake, which I didn’t get a photo of, was my favourite again. I couldn’t get enough of them last year!

Final Thoughts: Great food and great wine – what more can you ask for? All in all, we had a wonderful evening at the Spring Showcase. I was surprised to discover that their cooking classes are only $85 per person – much more affordable than the classes downtown. Too bad that North Van is just that bit too far out of my way or I’d be signing up for a class stat!

We are back! We just arrived back in Vancouver after three glorious weeks in Australia and I have plenty of foodie adventures to share with you, including a trip to Gordon Ramsay’s Maze and return visits to my favourite Darwin restaurants. However, I am still definitely deep in holiday mode so it will take me some time to write those up but in the meantime I have some serious catching up to do from before we left.

Just before we flew out to Australia we were invited to an open house at Louis Gervais Fine Foods & Catering, a North Vancouver based catering company. Considering that it was a free event, I was unsure whether to write it up and tell you all about it but then I thought that I want to tell you about all the good food in Vancouver, regardless of how I found out about it. So here I am, sharing my experience with you. Believe me when I say that if it hadn’t been good, I wouldn’t be saying anything at all.Louis Gervais wears many hats – they are a bistro, a cooking school, a gourmet caterer for parties, events and weddings, and they can provide take-out for a quiet night in. The event we attended was a stand-up cocktail event, which traditionally means scrambling for bites of foods but not in this case. We were served so much straight-from-the-kitchen finger foods and carefully selected European wines that we certainly didn’t go hungry.

Small portions of food were circulating the room at almost any given time and I was definitely impressed by the quality and the flavour of the dishes. The two items that left the biggest impression were the grilled asparagus and beef roulade that was served on top of a cheesy, truffled risotto. The strong-flavoured risotto paired very well with the delicate flavour of the roulade.

We also nibbled on delicious tempura snow peas and tempura prawns, individual sized cobb salads that came complete with a bacon stick (very cute), and the eye-catching beet dice (which is golden beet filled with chevre cheese and finished with a honey thyme reduction). Considering that Vancouverites seem to love beets and goat cheese, I can see that this dish would be the cause of some serious elbowing at local events.

Although we were bursting at the seams by this stage, when the plate of cupcakes (supplied by Marie Antoinette cakes) came out I still dove straight in. The white ones in the picture were masala honey cake with buckwheat honey mascarpone filling buttercream icing (I know, a bit of a tongue-twister) but the chocolate ones (I can’t remember what they were specifically) were my favourite.

Final Thoughts: I was extremely impressed with the goodies that were coming out of the kitchen at Louis Gervais. I would definitely consider using them to cater an event or attend one of their cooking classes. The food was well presented, interesting, and most importantly, it tasted great.
