Brief Description: A fantastic evening at the Irish Heather that combines beer, a big plate of comfort food and meeting new friends, all whilst managing to keep the financial belt well and truly reigned in.

Last night marked our third visit to the Irish Heather for the Long Table Series. The  series has really taken the Vancouver dining scene by storm with most of the dinners booked out until the end of October – wow! Good for the Irish Heather. Constantly being able to secure yourself 40 hungry (and most likely thirsty) patrons, 4 times a week, in a supposed economic downturn is nothing to sneeze at. Value for money is what people are looking for. And they certainly get that at the Long Table Series.

Beef Stroganoff with pasta

Last night, we dined on the Beef Stroganoff with Sour Cream and House Made Pasta (spätzle, I believe). It was actually my least favourite of the three dinners that we’ve had but, in fairness, it was up against some pretty tough competitors – the veal schnitzel (currently my fav) and the suckling pig. The serving size was so generous that I had to call for reinforcements to help me clean my plate. The spätzle was a nice, slightly different addition that went very well with the sauce, particularly once the sour cream had mixed through.

Again, I really enjoyed the accompanying Steam Whistle Pilsner but, on a side note, I’ve been absolutely blown away by another beer that they stock: the Mill Street Organic Lager. It’s a very light and refreshing beer (think along the lines of a Corona or a Sol). Apparently they got it in to fill the place of these very commonly sold summer beers. It really is one of the best new beers that I’ve tried in a while and, again, I am happy to report that it is Canadian. Hooray!

Final Thoughts: I don’t think I need to repeat myself…GO!

I had such a great time at our first Long Table Series dinner that there was no doubt that I would return – so long as I could get a reservation. Dining on mounds of succulent suckling pig, drinking unique beers and meeting friendly people was a fantastic way to spend a Tuesday evening. So, the very next day after our suckling pig dinner, I made it my mission to wrangle a few more friends into going to Long Table Series, Round 2 – veal schnitzel with mashed potatoes, carrots and anchovy butter. I say wrangle but, really, it wasn’t very difficult to talk people into parting with $12 in exchange for a heaping plate of delicious food and a cold, crisp beer.

Veal Schnitzel with mashed poatoes, carrots and anchovy butter

Although I was extremely happy with the suckling pig dinner, I wasn’t prepared for how wonderful the veal schnitzel would be. It was waaaay better than the suckling pig (in my opinion). Even the anchovy butter, which I’d had concerns about, was incredible and added great depth of flavour to an already tasty dish. The mashed potatoes were perfect for scooping onto a piece of schnitzel and using this to mop up pools of anchovy butter. Yummo!

Steam Whistle Pilsner

The Steam Whistle Pilsner was light and refreshing with a crisp finish. This is exactly how I like my beers, so I was instantly won over. Others in my group, however, did not enjoy it as much, preferring the more robust beers. I was even more impressed when I found out that the company is Canadian. Go Canada!

Final Thoughts: If you haven’t managed to get yourself a reservation for one of the dinners, get on it! Reservations are filling up FAST! And you won’t be disappointed.

For a foodie, the financial cost of regularly going out for dinner can take its toll. Thankfully, if you look hard enough a good deal can be had. Last night, B and I (and a friend) indulged in one such deal at the Long Table Series.

A 40 foot table in the Irish Heather, in Gastown, is the setting for a series of meals that have been matched to a beer or a cider for the very wallet-friendly price of $12 (soon to be $15). Diners go on-line to select a date, and the meal that they want to devour the most, and then email for reservations (don’t phone). Seats are fairly limited, particularly for the more favoured dishes, so keep your fingers crossed that you can get a spot! The series was initially intended to run for only 8 weeks but popular demand has forced them to extend it for another 9 weeks. Yay!

What you need to know:

* Everybody dines on the same great, filling meal that has been chosen for that evening to match with the feature beer/cider, for only $12 (changing to $15).

* The series currently runs from Monday through Wednesday, but this will soon be changing to add Thursday’s.

* Dinner is served promptly at 6.30pm on each evening.

* There are only 42 seats available for each dinner and you are encouraged to get to know the people around you.

* 8 new dishes and 9 new beers have just been added to coincide with the series extension.

Some of the menu choices include:

* Braised Beef Short Ribs with Roasted Parsnips and Horseradish Jus and a Pint of Guiness

* Roast Siroloin of Beef with Horseradish Jus, Mashed Potatoes & Yorkshire Pudding with a Pint of Phillips Blue Buck.

* Veal Schnitzel with Mashed Potatoes, Carrots and Anchovy Butter with a Bottle of Steam Whistle Pilsner.

* Beef Stroganoff with Sour Cream and House Made Pasta and a Bottle of Steam Whistle Pilsner.

* Roast Suckling Pig with Apple-Rosemary Sauce, Braised Cabbage & Mashed Potatoes with a Pint of Orchard Hill Cider.

We were lucky enough to get seats for the in-demand Roast Suckling Pig dinner and it was wonderful.

A big bowl of comfort food – tender slices of pork with intermittent pieces of crunchy pork skin, creamy mashed potatoes and braised cabbage all covered in an incredible apple-rosemary sauce. Mmmmm! Lip-smackingly good. I finished with the crème brulee but unfortunately, it was a tad too sweet for my liking.

Final Thoughts: Love, love, love it! I enjoyed it so much we are booked in next week for another dinner. This time we are trying the veal schnitzel! Yum!
